“Courage is found in unlikely places.”

― J.R.R. Tolkien

Wikipedia defines courage as “the choice and willingness to confront agony, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation.” Are you aware, however, that the root of the word courage is cor – the Latin word for heart? This original definition of courage meant "To speak one's mind by telling all one's heart."

Being confident and coping with uncertainty are ways to express courage. Trusting, embracing our fears, and being vulnerable is another. Making courageous choices, from what we say to how we choose to live, demonstrate a willingness to experience uncertainty from a place of personal empowerment. As we do so, we become more resilient and struggle less, our stress level decreases, and our heart opens and overflows with compassion.
